Nintendo Direct- 5/17/2013 - Video and Written Summary

During this morning's Nintendo Direct, there were a few surprises, and there is plenty of information to report. A new Mario & Sonic Olympics game was revealed, and Iwata announced a new Sonic the Hedgehog game exclusively for the Wii U and 3DS. In addition, there are new details on Resident Evil: Revelations, New Super Luigi U, and Pikmin 3. Full video and written summary after the break.

  • No release date given, but should be available before Olympics begin on February 7th, 2014
  • Some events, such as snowboarding, use Wii MotionPlus controls
  • Other events, such as curling, use GamePad and touchscreen

Sonic: Lost World

  • Exclusively on Wii U and 3DS
  • New Sonic the Hedgehog platformer
  • An image was shown, but no gameplay footage

Game & Wario

  • Fronks mini-game shown: supports 2-5 players, GamePad is passed around
  • Players launch Fronks characters at target, try to get highest score
  • Players can knock each others' Fronks off of the target

Resident Evil: Revelations

  • Available in stores and eShop on May 21st
  • Demo now available for free on eShop
  • HD remake of game released on 3DS last year
  • Hunk and Rachel are playable characters
  • Infernal Mode offers higher difficulty for skilled players
  • Supports Off-TV Play
  • Can be played using GamePad or Pro Controller
  • Miiverse support

New Super Luigi U

Blue Toad, Nabbit, Yellow Toad, and Luigi in Wii U game New Super Luigi U

  • Will be released as DLC for those who already own New Super Mario Bros. U with a price of $19.99
  • Will also be released as limited edition standalone boxed game which will retail for $29.99 in North America
  • DLC version coming June 20th
  • Boxed version scheduled for release in Europe on July 26th, and in North America on August 25th
  • Mario does not appear
  • In multiplayer, gamers can play as Luigi, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, or Nabbit
  • Nabbit can't use power-up items but he is invincible

The Wonderful 101

  • Scheduled for release in Europe on August 23rd, in North America on September 15th
  • No screenshots or gameplay shown, but the logo was revealed

Pikmin 3

  • Scheduled for release in Europe on July 26th
  • Three new characters introduced - Alph, Brittany, and Charlie
  • Each character will use Pikmin to gather fruit seeds to save their home, Planet Koppai
  • Resource management is a key element
  • You can send each character with a group of Pikmin to accomplish various tasks
  • Players can view a replay of the day and restart from a point of their choosing if something goes wrong
  • Iwata emphasized players can learn from their mistakes
  • Control options include GamePad, Wii U Pro Controller, and Wii RemotePlus with Nunchuk.
  • Off-TV Play confirmed
  • GamePad can be used as "KopPad" -display map, view information, etc.
  • Challenge Mode and multiplayer will be explained in future Nintendo Direct
